If your website can pass The Grunt Test, then you’re already half way to landing a new client.

What is The Grunt Test? I’m so glad you asked. It’s a test to see if your website is clear and concise enough for your audience. Here’s how it works:

If you showed someone your website for just 5 seconds would they be able to grunt out these 3 things about your business…

1. What you offer

2. How it’s gonna make their life better

3. What they need to do to buy it

If they can, then congrats! Your website is doing what it’s supposed to. If they can’t tell you these things about your business, then your website isn’t clear enough or getting to the point quick enough.

It’s important to remember that a human’s attention span is less than a goldfish’s. So you really only have 5 seconds to tell your audience everything then need to know in order to decide if they want to keep scrolling through your site or bail and look elsewhere.

Not only are we as humans lazy but we’re also busy af. People don’t have the time or patience to search your site for the answers they need. They want to know that they’re not wasting their time and energy on a website that doesn’t even offer a solution to their problem. That’s why you tell them right away and in a direct manner.


The first thing visitors should see on your site is what you do. JUST TELL THEM. In fact, make it painfully obvious.


For example, if you’re a business that matches people up with an online therapist, don’t make your Home Page’s main header Find help, find hope. Take the first step towards transformation.”

Instead say something like “Partnering you with a dedicated therapist that will change your life for the better.” That told your visitors exactly what you do and exactly what to expect from working together.

Think of it like this- If you go up to your crush and you say, “Coffee is so good, I drink it all the time.” They’re gonna be super confused and weirded out. Instead you would say “Hey, do you want to get coffee with me sometime. I think you’re a really lovely person and I’d love to take you on a date.”

Moral of the story: Stop being so passive in your marketing. You don’t have to make everything sound super poetic. Just say what you mean and say it well.

Then the second part to passing The Grunt Test is having a button with a clear CTA directly following your concise statement. Going along with our example, you’d have a bright button that says something like, “Get matched with your therapist today”. This tells your visitor exactly what to do and where to go.

Make it as easy as humanly possible for your audience to go where you want them to. Seems pretty damn obvious I know, but a lot of us are a little scared to tell people what to do. We don’t want to come off too intimidating or pushy. However, our audience actually appreciates being told what to do in situations like this. It also subconsciously tells them that you’re confident in what you do/how you can help them.

If you apply these tips to your website and make sure you pass The Grunt Test, your audience will spend much more time on your website learning about how you can solve their problem, leaving them no choice but to jump on the opportunity of working with you.
